Stoplight Stress Relief

6/7/2022 | Robert Rivest

Red light, Green light.
3 ways to relieve stress at a stoplight.

1. Take three mindful breaths. Simply feel the sensation of your in-breath and out-breath for 3 cycles. Or, if you prefer, do the 4-6 breath. Breathe-in for the count of 4 and breath-out for the count of 6. You may enjoy this so much, that you continue it even when the light turns green.

2. Do a body scan. Notice where you are holding tension. Do a tension release exercise: Breathe in, and tighten all of your muscles. Breathe out, and slowly lengthen them, soften them, and release them. You can also do little micro movements to loosen your neck, shoulders, arms and hands.

3. Positive self talk. Repeat a mantra, mindful verse, or positive phrase. I usually silently say “I am, here now.” “I am“ on the in-breath, “Here now“ on the out-breath. Another internal phrase I say is “This is a moment in my life, I want to enjoy every moment of my life."

These 3 stoplight practices, help me relieve stress in a matter of minutes. Can you see them working for you? What are some positive ways that help you relieve stress at a stoplight, in traffic or when running late?
